These are Long Island’s 12 Best Italian Restaurants

by Mike Simonson
New York City isn't the only place with great Italian food.

Long Island has long been a bastion of great Italian cuisine.

We've compiled a list of our favorite Italian spots - and included 12 in all because it was so hard to whittle it down to anything smaller.

Long Island has long been a bastion of great Italian cuisine thanks to its robust Italian-American population dating back to 1880. We searched its 97 villages – miles of linguine, Olympic-sized pools of marinara, and enough garlic bread to fill a U-Haul – to create this list of our 12 favorite Italian restaurants on Long Island.

Best Italian Restaurants on Long Island

Manetta’s

Long Island City

Settle in by the fire at this Long Island City classic, where you can savor a brick oven pizza with fresh mozzarella, dig into a plate of pesto pasta, or enjoy some of the finest pappardelle in the neighborhood. With its cozy, welcoming vibe and a diverse menu that won’t break the bank, Manetta’s is a go-to spot that’s sure to please just about everyone.

Vincent’s Clam Bar

Carle Place

If Italian-style seafood is what you’re craving, Vincent’s Clam Bar is the place to be, whether you’re indulging in baked clams oreganato or the signature lobster kiss. But seafood isn’t the only highlight—Italian classics like eggplant rollatini and pork saltimbocca are equally tempting. Don’t forget to grab a jar of their freshly made sauces to bring a taste of Vincent’s home with you.

Osteria Umbra

Smithtown

For an unforgettable dining experience on Long Island, Osteria Umbra delivers with a seasonal menu and an extensive wine list, all set in a stunning atmosphere with warm, welcoming service. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just elevating your weeknight, Osteria Umbra brings the flavors and charm of Italy’s ‘Green Heart’ right to Long Island.

Cirella’s

Melville

Cirella’s is where Italian classics meet sushi rolls, but it’s the live jazz that keeps you lingering. With generous portions and a laid-back vibe, it’s an ideal spot for family meals by day, while the evening scene caters to a more mature crowd. And whatever you do, don’t skip the antipasti.

Franina Ristorante

Syosset

Franina Ristorante marries traditional Italian fare with a few bold twists—think grilled Mediterranean octopus alongside wild boar sausage for the more adventurous eater. With a commitment to organic ingredients, including hand-cut pasta made in-house, this spot has earned glowing praise from Zagat. Whether you’re sticking to the classics or exploring something new, dining at Franina’s is nothing short of exceptional.

Da Noi Italian Restaurant

Islip

Tucked away in Islip, Da Noi is a local gem that shines with its commitment to fresh, local ingredients. The pasta here isn’t just fresh—it’s handmade to order.. The veal has earned a reputation for being downright heavenly, and the sea bass is a must-try. If you’ve got room for dessert, the tazzia di profiterole—puff pastries filled with Chantilly cream and draped in vanilla and chocolate—is the sweet finale you didn’t know you needed.

Galleria Ristorante

Westbury

With its sleek, modern aesthetic, Galleria Ristorante elevates the experience of fine Italian dining. Rated four stars by the New York Times, this spot combines top-tier service with a welcoming, homey vibe. A few nights a week, live soft piano music adds to the ambiance, making it an ideal backdrop for indulging in some of the freshest fish on Long Island. And don’t leave without savoring their unbeatable espresso.

Stresa

Manhasset

Stresa channels old-world charm and European elegance, making you feel like you’ve stepped into one of New York City’s classic Italian establishments. Specializing in Northern Italian cuisine, this spot evokes the golden age of fine dining, with owners who go above and beyond to make every guest feel pampered. Dining at Stresa feels more like being welcomed into someone’s home than eating out. Don’t miss the signature Rigatoni Stresa or the timeless crème brûlée—they’re worth the visit alone.

La Scala Restaurant and Pizzeria

Commack

La Scala might be famous for serving some of the best thin-crust pizza on Long Island, but stopping there would be a mistake. This unassuming spot, with a casual front and a serene dining room in the back, also offers standout non-pizza entrées like shrimp fra diavolo and mussels marinara. Lighter lunch options are available, and their takeout business is booming, with slices, full pies, and heroes flying out the door. And whatever you do, don’t skip the dessert tray—it’s a showstopper.

Joanina

Huntington

Restaurant Joanina immerses you in a vibrant, rustic atmosphere reminiscent of the Tuscan countryside. Begin your meal with creamy, honey-drizzled stracciatella, then share a pizza from their wood-burning brick oven. Their homemade pasta—featuring agnolotti, taglioni, and lasagna—is truly exceptional, offering a taste of Italy that’s hard to beat.

Grotta di Fuoco

Long Beach

On Long Beach, Grotta di Fuoco (Italian for ‘Fireplace Cave’) serves up an inventive menu with a side of warm, welcoming service. Dive into their saffron risotto, generously topped with head-on shrimp, scallops, mussels, and clams, or savor the wild boar tagliatelle—flavors are bold and abundant. Finish your meal with one of their unique cocktails, like the Cactus Flower, a rum concoction with prickly pear and cardamom that’s sure to leave you speechless.

Nunzi’s

Farmingdale

Nunzi’s combines a romantic, modern vibe with Italian classics that impress. Begin with limoncello wings, featuring grilled lemon and Calabrian chili, before diving into their pizzas and pastas. Can’t decide between the bold spicy rigatoni and the elegant lobster pappardelle? Order both. For an extra touch of indulgence, add a ball of burrata to any pasta dish.
