We got our first taste of summer this week with an above 80-degree day which made us crave the sunny weather even more. Yes, we begged for spring but now we’re getting ready for summer, with its park picnics, patio sipping, and warm nights.
It’s time to put away our deep reds and bring out the light-bodied everything. Sun equals descriptors like “crisp and refreshing” and “citrus forward” because that’s how we want to feel after a day at the beach. Check out the list below of wines we recommend for the upcoming summer season!
Orange Wine: It’s made by aging the white grapes with their skin, which give this beverage its signature color, and it’s our new favorite thing. Combine the refreshing zest of a quality white wine with the fruity palate of a rosé and you have the personality of the orange wine. Honestly, it may be the new summer water.
Canned Wine: We’ve discussed it before and we’ll mention it again- canned wine is the future. There are some really fantastic brands out there like Underwood and Amble & Chase that are making truly delicious wines but in our favorite packaging: cans. Many producers are branching out with their varietals but the true convenience factor remains the winning feature.
Low Alcohol Wines: Okay, we know the concept is a bit shocking but consider it. The higher the alcohol, the more dehydrated you get, and if you’re out playing in the sun all day, who wants to be dehydrated? Plus, the lower the alcohol, the more robust and unique the flavors are because they’re not masked by that alcoholic taste.
Spanish Rosé: You already know that you love rosé as a summer drink but branch out a little and try some from Spain. Look for a little more individuality in the flavor, especially in the bubbly ones. Spanish grapes tend to be quite robust and eccentric on their own, so as a rosé, it’s a really fun time.
Chenin Blanc: Everyone thinks of Sauv Blanc or Pinot Grigio for a warm weather white but don’t overlook the Chenin Blanc. It’s crisp and refreshing but brings a little more to the table than the other two. The French have it down (of course) but explore some from South Africa for a little something different. It’s a perfect pairing for that cheese you’re planning to take to your park picnic.
