If you’ve been following along with your articles, then you know just how much we love New York wines and wineries. This state is a mecca for new and innovative creations, as well as classic and elegant centuries old varietals, and we are here for all of it.
One of the organizations that support the industry in our great state is the New York Wine and Grape Foundation, which not only helps to generate billions of dollars for the wine industry but also provides a network and community for producers. Within the organization is a group called NY Drinks NY, a subsection that hosts events for New York wineries here in the city at local restaurants and bars. This division of the Foundation offers special opportunities to consumer members such as discounts to fantastic events and tastings that get them closer to the producers themselves, and trade members are exposed to swaths of the general public that they may not generally get to market to on a regular basis. It provides a network and community here in the city for even the smallest of wineries all the way upstate.
Each year, NY Drinks NY throws an enormous, spectacular event called The Grand Tasting, and the 2019 event is coming up on March 26th. We had the honor of speaking with Paul Brady, who was recently brought on as the New York Wine Brand Ambassador for the Foundation and has a fantastic career as a sommelier for some of NYC’s finest establishments like the Brooklyn Winery and Tom Colicchio’s Temple Court.
In preparation for this year’s Grand Tasting, Paul drove from the East End of Long Island all the way to the northwest corner of the Niagara Escarpment to visit every single one of the 47 wineries that will be in attendance. When asked what he believes makes New York a special part of the wine industry, he said: “New York State is like its own country in regards to the diversity of the grapes.”
One of the most extraordinary aspects of the industry in this state is the incredibly high quality of the grapes offered at a competitive price. As Brady says, “You want a Bordeaux-style blend? New York has it. Rustic, earthy style reds from Europe? We’ve got it.” The quality of New York wines can be compared to that of Napa and they’re acquiring just as much critical acclaim as those of California, Oregon, or Washington, but at a much lower cost without sacrificing any quality.
The wide range of wineries and varietals produced here in New York are exactly why an event like the NY Drinks NY Grand Tasting is so important. It’s set up like a wholesale portfolio tasting event but the presenters are the actual member wineries which creates a unique opportunity for consumer wine drinkers and trade professionals to come together and learn from each other, says Brady.
Join us in tasting wines from 47 wineries across this great state, of course, accompanied by delicious treats and snacks. If you are as much of a wine lover as we are, then don’t miss the 8th Annual NY Drinks NY Grand Tasting coming up on March 26th at the Rainbow Room. Grab your tickets now!
