For centuries, the French have been known as the greatest wine producers in the world. They wrote the book on vinification and were the ones who even named the varietals. We’ve always looked to the French for the fundamentals of producing a great wine, even here in the United States.
In particular, the Bordeaux region of France is the most famous of the wine producing regions, particularly for their gorgeous reds. This is unique because most wines refer to the grape, rather than the wine itself, although a Bordeaux blend will always imply the wine is made from a combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petite Verdot grapes.
Although many places, including California, produce what they call “Bordeaux” red blends, but a true Bordeaux can only come from that specific region in France. It’s because of this exclusivity that we weren’t surprised at how expensive some of them are!

Coming in at a whopping six grand and 100 points from Wine Enthusiast, the Chateau Petrus 2005 Pomerol is a stunning red blend that is worth every pretty penny. It’s one of the prized vintages from this established chateau, and the beautiful flavors of black figs, dark chocolate and plums will bring you so much joy. $6000
Since 1764, the Chateau les Ormes Sorbet has been producing outstanding wines, and the 2013 Medoc is without a doubt the best. The ripe blackberries provide a juicy freshness and just a hint of acidity that blend perfectly to give you a beautifully perfumed wine to enjoy. $3300
Next on the list is the Chateau Latour 2009 Pauillac. In true Bordeaux blend style, this gorgeous red brings you a mix of plum and berry flavors that is fruity and spicy which gently balances the acidity. You can enjoy it too for just $2300!
The Chateau Margaux 2009 Margaux really brings a punch with their self-titled blend. With more Cabernet Sauvignon than usual, this bottle has more of an intense black currant flavor than the others, giving an enticing acidity. $1900
Known for producing some of the world’s most expensive wines, Chateau Lafite Rothschild doesn’t disappoint with their 2010 Pauillac. With its intense, almost black color, and beautiful tannins, it’s no wonder this bottle is so revered. $1500
